Fairford Academy Barnehurst - FAB Launch Day
Fri 11 Feb 2022On Friday 11th February, we launched our new library and new school name FAIRFORD ACADEMY BARNEHURST.
FAIRFORD LIBRARY
We have been making our new library a more attractive area for pupils since just before Christmas, inviting Arty Party into our school on two separate occasions. Arty Party worked with pupils to make large models of book characters to brighten up the ceiling area of our library and to make a large entrance arch of books and book characters. It really has brightened up this area and makes an inviting area for the children to enjoy getting engrossed in a book.
We have added thousands and thousands of pounds worth of brand new books to each classroom and our new library area. These new reading texts have helped to improve each of our class reading areas along with our main school library area.
We have also built a digital research area within our library to promote the use of technology to support reading and learning, a bright area surrounded by colourful digital images along with Chrome books set up for use by the pupils.
FAIRFORD NAME LAUNCH
To celebrate our new school name, all year groups had assemblies with one of our featured Poets, Paul Lyalls and Justin Coe, who have been writing poetry for years. The children thoroughly enjoyed experiencing live poetry and have written some of their own amazing poems.
During the morning, we were joined by Sir David Evennett (MP for Bexley), Councillor James Hunt (Mayor for Bexley), Paul Holloway (Chauffeur to the Mayor), Mrs Robinson (Chief Operating Officer), Bertie (one of our new Trust Dog Mentors) and Mr Clements, Mrs Tolliday and Miss Morris who are all Governors of our school. Our Reading Ambassadors offered them refreshments in our new school library, before showing them around the library and the incredible art work on show and the hundreds of new books filling the shelves.
Later, our visitors joined us in the hall for our Launch Assembly with our pupils. There was a mixture of memories of our old school, excitement about our future journey and celebration of our new name and logo, along with the Trust's new name of Illuminate Minds Trust. We heard from Ms Southby (CEO/ EHT) discussing the reason behind our trust name and School name change. We awarded pupils with prizes for their ideas towards what will go inside our Time Capsule celebrating the old of Normandy and the new of Fairford schools. I wonder who will open this capsule in 50 years time?
Finally, we had performance poetry from both Justin and Paul, including a unique and specially commissioned poem by Paul especially for our school. Every pupil was given a copy of this poem to keep.
What a FABulous day we had!

It was wonderful to see all of the different costumes and creative ideas on display. The children had fun being dressed up and comparing their costumes with their peers. Have a look at the fantastic costumes in the photos below.
Don't forget to log into TTRS/ Numbots for at least 5 minutes every day, to compete with friends, improve your maths skills and have fun learning!

Reading at Fairford Academy Barnehurst
Fri 21 Jan 2022At Fairford Academy Barnehurst, we value reading and see it as a very important tool to help our pupils to grow and develop their love of language and thirst for learning. With this in mind, we have purchased thousands of pounds worth of books for each classroom as well as more books for our wonderful library area.
We have commissioned Arty Party to work with the children and make some fantastic book characters for our library area. I'm sure you will agree that these look absolutely amazing and make our library a 'happy and bright' place for the children to enjoy a book or two.
Here's what our pupils have to say about reading and the exciting new books that we have purchased:
'I love reading because I like the letters in the books and that is why I love school' Layla, Class RE
'I like looking at the pictures and I enjoy reading at home with my mummy' Zarina, Class RE
'I enjoy getting sucked into reading for hours and these new books are novels so I will be able to read for hours' Rylan, Year 5
'I didn't know we were getting these books and it is a nice opportunity to read new ones. Thank you Mrs Whittington' Nancy, Year 5

Christmas Dinner Day
Wed 08 Dec 2021Pupils enjoyed a tasty Christmas Feast of Roast Turkey and all the trimmings followed by a selection of delicious desserts. Each child was given a Christmas hat to wear, if they chose, and sang along to the festive Christmas songs that were playing in the playground. Thank you to our Kitchen Team for all their hard work and to the Midday Supervisors for ensuring that every child enjoyed the lunchtime celebrations.

Odd Socks Day
Fri 19 Nov 2021We invited all pupils to come into school wearing odd socks this week to raise money for Children's Cancer Research UK. Our School Council chose this charity as they do so much for children who are unwell and are well deserving of support.
Thank you to all of those who took part and for raising money for such a wonderful charity.

Great Fire of London Workshop - Year 2 pupils
Fri 19 Nov 2021Our Year 2 classes enjoyed a visit from Freshwater Theatre who delivered a fantastic workshop based on the 'Great Fire of London'. During the workshop, the children time travelled back to 1666 and re-enacted the story of how the fire started and what they did to try to stop London from burning down. The children really enjoyed the workshop and this has developed their understanding of this topic.

Remembrance Day Assemblies
Thu 11 Nov 2021We held special assemblies this week to commemorate Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, which is held on 11th of November every year.
We discussed why this day is so important and the different ways that people remember the fallen soldiers who served during the war and those that serve now. We also explained the meaning of the different colour poppies, for example, the Red poppy which is used to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in World War One and conflicts that followed, the Purple poppy which is often worn to remember animals that have been victims of war, the Black poppy which recognises the African and Caribbean communities contribution to the war effort and the White poppy which is worn by people who feel that the Red poppy glorifies war and conflict and feel that a White poppy promotes peace.
We observed a two minutes silence as a mark of respect to those who have served and are currently serving members of the forces. We had a huge response to our sale of poppies which goes to the Royal British Legion and when we have a final sale figure, we will let you know. Thank you as always for your continued support.
