  • Year 4 & 5 - World Para-Swimming Championships

    Wed 11 Sep 2019

On Wednesday, pupils in Years 5 & 5 went to watch the World Para-Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. They travelled to the venue via train and the DLR, arriving at the aquatics centre ready and excited to watch the swimming heats. The children took their seats and watched with enthusiasm and awe as the swimmers competed in events such as Men's 100m Backstroke and Women's 100m Butterfly. The swimmers competed in events specific to their disability and it was amazing to see such resilience (one of our school values) and effort they put in to achieve their winning dreams. Our pupils had a fantastic day and I am sure they will remember this event for many years to come.

Some pupil feedback of the event:

'I enjoyed the trip, it made me realise that disabled people are stronger than I thought' - Year 4 child

'It was mind-blowing how people that have a disability such as missing a leg or arm can swim so quickly and gracefully' - Year 5 child

'It was amazing to see disabled swimmers reaching their goal and trying their hardest' - Year 5 child

Thank you to the teachers for organising a fantastic day and to all of the parent helpers who made this trip possible.

How you can help your child

Children really enjoy coming home and speaking to you about their day and what they are learning in school. You can help your child at home by giving encouragement and showing appreciation of your child's achievements which will hugely boost their confidence. Family life oftern gets busy but there are ways of being involved in your child's education without feeling overwhelmed.

    • Make sure your child gives you any letters that are sent home.
    • If you can, check the school website regularly for updates and important news.
    • Read with your child whenever you can. It may be for only five minutes when you are busy or maybe for a little bit longer as part of their bedtime routine. Children love to read at bedtime as they feel they are staying up a little longer!
    • If you are worried about anything, speak to your child's class teacher.
    • Most importantly, make it fun!
